What a sweet surprise one lucky mother will be in for, when she sees these images of her beautiful son with his father…

This image of such a sweet little boy with his father melts me. They were so precious. In a manly way, of course… :)

Look at this gorgeous kid. He’s so loved, so sweet, incredibly kind. You can feel it when you talk to him. That he’s got it made with parents that adore him. I love capturing images like these.

It’s hard to keep up with posting lately, but I’ve GOT to share these amazing images!

I recently photographed this sweet 4 year old when him and mommy made the trip from Oconomowoc out to Brookfield for an itty-bitty photography session in the studio.   He was so easy, pleasant, cooperative and obviously- adorable.

My “baby” turned three this weekend.  Where does the time go?  I mean, really?  This was just a picture of him taken outside on our tire swing yesterday, gorgeous yesterday, that is… and it’s a classic Calvin look.  Three years went by crazy fast.  How does that happen?!

Things have been crazy lately! Time to catch up on some images from recent photography sessions, in the studio and on-location, throughout Milwaukee.

I traveled into Wauwatosa for this amazing maternity portrait session. Photographing this GORGEOUS couple while she was pregnant was such a treat, they were so sweet and easy to photograph…

They had SO many images to choose from (yes, they’ve already had their projection appointment!) and they managed to choose the most beautiful portraits for their wall and album. :) I can not wait to meet their precious baby after such a wonderful pregnancy session!

These next few are from an itty bitty photography session that took place in the studio.  Adorable boys!

And another newborn baby… who was beyond adorable.  I just LOVE newborn sessions.  (In case I haven’t mentioned that before!)  There is nothing more precious or amazing to photograph and document, than a tiny new baby.

And the little sister of another beautiful little girl…

Some more images from the mother’s day event… (I still have MORE to post!)…

That does it for now… I have more mother’s day session portraits to post images of and a few more itty bitty sessions, but that will have to wait until next week.  Have a wonderful weekend!

A fellow photographer and friend, Pam Nafziger, of Casual Moments Photography compiled a few photographers’ articles with photography tips and pointers, and put them all together, easy for everyone to access the articles.  It’s fun to read through them, as each wonderful children’s photographer offers a different point of view and focuses on their own aspect of photographing kids and babies.

I’m often asked about photographing newborns… the most common question during the consult is: WHY on earth does it take 3 hours for a newborn session? Other common questions: How should we prepare, and what should we expect?

I’d like to take this post to answer some of those common questions about newborn baby photography.  The most important thing about getting the sweet, new curled up newborn baby images is patience. I can not emphasize enough how much waiting, holding, feeding, snuggling, and some more waiting takes place during newborn sessions.

pla_27bw.jpg

This kind of image takes time to capture… and it’s worth the wait. Holding a baby until he or she is calm and quiet and then expecting to be able to lie them down and pose them all squished up just doesn’t happen! I encourage parents to hold them for a good 10+ minutes AFTER they seem to be in a deep sleep, to be sure they’re really relaxed.

Another important aspect of getting a newborn baby comfortable and relaxed is keeping them very warm. Space heaters are wonderful assets during newborn sessions! I recommend turning the heat up to what is often uncomfortably warm for us adults, but if we’re sweating, then the naked snuggly baby is probably happy and comfortable.

Keeping their belly full is also essential. No baby is happy if they’re either hungry or just on the verge of being hungry! There are a lot of nursing/feeding breaks during newborn sessions. I’ve become pretty proficient at recognizing the hungry baby looks and cries, and the sooner we feed that sweet little teeny babe, the sooner we can get back to photographing him or her!

One thing to keep in mind is that we can’t control these tiny babies. Despite having years of experience professionally photographing newborns, I fully admit that when it comes down to it, the 5 day old baby is actually running the session! Some babies don’t sleep. Some only sleep and are never awake. Some need to be held all the time. Some are so very cooperative and others take four hours to become cooperative!

At a newborn session, I photograph their beautiful eyes when they’re awake and for the most part, am trying to keep them relaxed and happy the rest of the time. :)

Another facet of expectations is that the “family portrait” with newborn should be considered icing on the cake! Focus on your newborn when trying to capture amazing images of him or her, and if that goes wonderfully, round up the family. I like to keep the focus on the baby, like this image:

pla_70.jpg

Timing is also important. Your newborn session should always take place within the first 10 days whenever possible, for the new, curled up, scrunchy baby types of images. At three weeks, the scrunchyness has faded, and a good variety will be difficult. Have your photographer come SOON, or take your own images soon!

Hopefully these tips are helpful for those wondering what to expect for their professional newborn session and for those who try to photograph their own little one without a professional photographer. Those scrunchy newborn images will be amazing for a lifetime. It’s such a fleeting time, a time that passes in a blur, and the images are ones you’ll never regret making the time to capture.

This boy, this family… was so wonderful to photograph. They were far away from their California home here in Milwaukee, and it was a pleasure to photograph them in the studio. At three months, this little boy was just the absolute sweetest little boy. His parents were so kind and loving, so caring and patient with him and just all around sweet.

He did great on the plane… such a perfect little boy. Here are some images of him. This first one just takes the breath right out of me. So gorgeous.

And his skin tones, his beautiful complexion and his hair and eyes and lips… he is just scrumptious!!

So loved by mommy & daddy…

And SO expressive!! Love his eye contact, those beautiful eyes and little face. It melts me!

I look forward to seeing some of you tomorrow for the Mother’s Day event, it will be a fun morning! Have a wonderful weekend!

After getting into the studio in January, I’m finally getting around to feeling like it’s almost perfect. And finally, I can share some images of it. :) It has taken a long time to make it just right, and still, I have two more wall portraits to display.

I’ve had several itty bitty photography sessions (and a few full children’s portrait sessions) in the studio now, and I just LOVE the natural light for photographing a baby or siblings. The location in Brookfield on Capitol Drive is fabulous, and only about 10 minutes west of where I previously had the in-home viewing gallery in Wauwatosa. More than anything, it is so nice to have some separation between home and work! I love photography with all my soul, and am truly honored to be a newborn and children’s photographer, but after three years of working out of the house, it was time for this move!

Here are some images! Call or email if you’d like to stop in for a visit!

Before posting a few images of the happiest, sweetest, most adorably chunky baby girl… quick update on the mother’s day event Saturday- all the spots filled up, however this morning I had one cancel… leaving us with one open spot! Let me know if you’d like information.

Now for the good stuff- images of this baby girl. I’ve known her since she was inside her beautiful mother’s belly, we had an amazing maternity session when she was still pregnant, and this sweet girl has grown so much since she was a newborn!

Enjoy!
