I will be announcing some dates this week (hopefully) for mini sessions through Arrivals in the month of October. Stacey and I have had tremendous success with mini sessions in the past, and this next one will be geared towards holiday gift prints and cards.
Please check back in within the coming days/week to see what the date is, what collections will be available, and reserve your mini session!

This adorable (wild) little sassafrass was the epitome of 18 months…
into everything, everywhere, but anti-camera!
I’m a little behind… just wanting to quick share some of these cutie…
Gallery night last weekend was a smashing success! I had a great, great time meeting some new people, and had a embarrassingly fun time seeing some old friends and clients! Embarrassing… because I was trying on the bump pad in Arrival’s… you know, the one that makes you look 7 months pregnant? I probably shouldn’t have left the fitting room with that on, because of course- as soon as I do, I know the person standing there, making her think I have hid something very well for very long!!
Thank you to all for stopping out to visit Arrivals, I had a wonderful time chatting!

I will be offering gift certificate specials that night perfect if you have a fall session on the schedule or if you know someone who does! If you have a session on the fall calendar, or if you plan on scheduling a session over the course of the next 6 months… consider a gift certificate and save up to $100 on your session fee or order!
I hope to see you there! I will have framed artwork, gallery wraps, albums, coffee table books and sample birth announcements and holiday cards.
Call or email me with any questions about Gallery Night- the Spring Gallery Night was a great success, it was WONDERFUL to meet so many new people and to chat about the images that were on display! I appreciate Arrival’s for showcasing my work and for inviting me to be the featured artist on Gallery Night. A few portraits may be seen any time inside Arrival’s, which is hands down, the most fantastic maternity boutique I’ve been in. (Kind of makes you want to have a neeeeeed for those maternity clothes!)
And a beautiful “then and now”…
Hope to see you in Delafield tonight!

This itty bitty girl was just barely 2 days old when I met her. Have I mentioned lately how just…. amazingly truly honored I am to be invited into your lives at such special times…?! Well I am. Honored beyond words. Sorry to gush about this every other week but it is true!! What this family was experiencing 2 days after their third daughter was born was just magical. They love and care for each other SO much, such a loving, kind, sweet family.
I feel so blessed, so lucky to do what I do.

I was asked recently during a consultation if I would pose a family during their session. The simple answer: not really. It was a funny conversation, because this particular woman thought she wanted to be posed, because she didn’t know how to pose herself… but at the same time, she liked the look of my other images, which are basically “unposed.” We talked about it and I decided I wanted to share the conversation here with any other readers.
When I think of posing, I think of “Tilt your chin down a little” and “angle your head 90 degrees whatever.” Surely, these directions would not work for my clients (or my style…) being that most of my clients are TOO little to follow them, but I do want to talk about it anyway.
I give some general directions… I like to think of it as just that: general directions, not so much posing. I’ll often indicate where to sit, what to do… “Go hang out under that tree” or “Just play with your baby” or “loosen up- wiggle if you have to!” However beyond that, I don’t do much more. I *want* you to be comfortable and natural. Keep it simple and real. If you ask how to sit, I’ll say: “sit how you’re comfortable.” If you ask where to look, I’ll say: “look at your baby- who you’re interacting with.” Now don’t get me wrong- I do have some images of more than one person looking at the camera at the same time- that’s not just luck. I certainly do at times ask for eye contact without a smile or to the little ones: look deep inside my camera… but I want you to look natural in your images; I want to capture you how you really are, not a stiff, smiling version of who you are.
For newborn sessions, I do enjoy and strive to capture some of baby alone, in your hands or arms, on a solid (or textured) blanket- you can’t beat the simplicity and artistry of those types of images…
But at the same time, images that are basically unposed yet artistic show more of who you are and “tell” more about you and your life, perhaps tell a bit about the dynamics of your relationships…
I look for the light, follow the light, and let you know where to stand/sit/hang out so that the images will be compositionally beautiful and well-lit, and the rest is up to you to be yourselves and let me document it!
Anyway, just hoping to shed some light on what happens during a session. I am looking forward to meeting your little ones, M!
I also received a WONDERFUL compliment this morning- I was told by a new client whom I have not yet met that by reading through the blog, she felt like she knew me. *That* is why I do this, and I am so happy to hear that kind of comment. Thank you B, and I look forward to your session very much!

Nothing like a last minute sneak peek! Can’t wait for you to see all of them, M & R!
Here are a *few* of my many many favorites….
Posted on September 5, 2007
I’m a smidge behind in sneak peeks- sorry for the delay! If you provided release for it and are waiting to see an image or four from your session, I will get your sneak peek up before you come for your viewing and ordering appointment… bare with me!
Most of my clients know (and many have experienced) that the processing of images from newborn sessions gets bumped to the front of the line, so that their birth announcements can be designed, printed and ready quickly. Here is just one- baby A, 6 days old here:
She is so stunning…
And some occasionally inevitable business talk: Fall is *just* around the corner and I want to get a few things out of the way before there’s even less time to post (hey- so what if it’s midnight right now?!)
First, the deadline for holiday portraits/cards… To have your portraits and/or cards ready to pick up by Tuesday, Dec. 18th, your session must take place by November 1. Sessions after November 1 will not be guaranteed by Christmas. This essentially means that your ordering session will take place 2-3 weeks after your session, putting it towards the end of November, and we can’t drag our feet on getting that ordering session in promptly!
Second, during the fall madness, it will be more important than ever to maintain regular business hours for consultations, viewing/ordering appointments, and pick-up/framing appointments. Last year in both October and November, we conducted more than double the highest number of sessions from any other month. Viewing and ordering appointments, as usual, are available early in the morning or around the lunch hour on certain days of the week, depending on the week. If you do have an absolute need for an evening, one evening appointment is conducted per month, the 2nd Tuesday of every month, and October’s is filled. If you have a session coming and need the November evening time for your viewing/ordering, please let me know ASAP.
We’ve got lots of babies on the calendar in the coming months; besides those that we are expecting, there are two sessions availble this month- one weekday and one weekend. Call or email if you’d like to reserve one!
Lastly, October dates are filling up quickly. All but the last week of October have availability. Schedule early!
Have a wonderful Thursday!

It’s labor day, and while my own children are napping, I wanted to post some maternity images AND some newborn images, because it seems appropriate.
I also wanted to take a moment to acknowledge people’s different opinions on various “types” of maternity. Some of my clients LOVE artistic maternity images with the expecting mother nude or topless (yet leaving some to the imagination.) Many women want maternity images that focus more on their relationship with their other child(ren) and pay little attention to the growing belly. And some women enjoy maternity sessions with or without other children in which they remain fully clothed.
It is worth mentioning that I respect all of these desires in what women are looking for in maternity portraits and am happy to oblige. Some of my favorite maternity images of all time have been on both ends of the spectrum: A radiant mother with her 3 year old gorgeous daughter, playing on the beach and enjoying the company of one another… A first time mom who wanted to document her stunning curves when pregnant… A mother of three, going on four, interested in documenting both her evolving relationship with her children and her beautiful pregnant body…
I realize that not all people stopping by may enjoy seeing the nude images, but artistically, I’d barely survive without them.
Do not click to enlarge if this is not your *thing* but… of course, these are beautiful.
And one of a very recent newborn, 3 days old in this image…
Enjoy the beautiful weather and time with your families this Labor Day!
